Metal illness and suicidal behavior among children between the ages of 9-11 is increasing in America. And according to a new study this correlates with the increased time that children are spending on their tablets, smart phones and similar devices more and more.

The study “Screen time and suicidal behaviors among U.S. children 9–11 years old: A prospective cohort study”, that was published on Preventive Medicine involved over 11,000 children over period of 2 years, who got to answer questions about their screen time and thoughts about their own well being and suicidal thoughts.

Researchers could show that every additional hour a child spent in front of a screen, was associated with a 9 percent increase of having suicidal thoughts.

According to professor Jason Nagata, one of the researchers behind the study, an increased screen time among children can lead to social isolation, cyberbullying and sleep disturbances, which can worsen their mental health.

More screen time often means that time for socializing with other people, physical activity and sleep disappears, according to Nagata.

It’s important that parents talk to their kids about these issues and act like role models to prevent children of today to develop an unhealthy lifestyle, the study concludes.
